“Flying starts from the ground. The more grounded you are, the higher you fly.” – J.R. Rim
Yoga teachers love to tell their classes to “get grounded”, “ground down”, “root down”, and “connect to the earth”.
I know this for fact because I’ve both said and heard ALL of those expressions at least a million times.
And yet, there is absolutely nothing cliche about those phrases.
Or maybe there is, but they fit in line with some of the best cliches of all time, like “read between the lines.”
we love you
But I digress.
Perhaps the words don’t feel as powerful after eons of overuse, but the message behind each is incredibly important for practitioners at every level.
Why? Because when we connect to the earth, we connect to something much larger than ourselves. We create a hOMebase for our physical bodies and tap directly into our Root Chakra.
The root chakra is the seat of our core needs for life – survival, security, family, memories, traditions, taking care of ourselves, and taking care of others. it is located at the base of the spine (think tailbone) and is associated with the color red.
When the Root Chakra is unbalanced, we tend to feel confused, stagnant, anxious, unfocused, restless, fearful, guilty, resentful, worries, stressed, and self-destructive. Even more problematically, without a balanced Root Chakra, it is impossible to fully balance the other chakras.
Conversely, when the root chakra IS balanced we tend to feel centered, satisfied, contented, safe and secure in the world, physically fit and strong, connected to nature, and aware of our real needs and aspirations.
So let’s get grounded, shall we?
Here are my favorite quotes to reread – and share with my students – when I feel the need to find peace with myself, my surroundings, the events of my life, and the people I interact with. For the moments when I need to root down to rise up.
Don’t place your mistakes on your head, their weight may crush you. Instead, place them under your feet and use them as a platform to view your horizons.
“It was when I stopped searching for home within others and lifted the foundations of home within myself I found there were no roots more intimate than those between a mind and body that have decided to be whole.”

“We can go through our five senses in about a minute’s time to become grounded in the present; and we can do this anytime we find ourselves in worry or speculation. Becoming grounded in our present makes us available to happiness.”

Bridget Riepl is a mom, a yoga teacher, a former lawyer, a writer, a moderately decent cook, a really good baker, a seeker of fantastic coffee and a firm believer in the power of positive thinking. Bridget became all those things around the same time and credits the whole “former lawyer” thing as the impetus for most of the fun stuff she gets to do on a daily basis now. That, and her husband Joe’s complete willingness to support her spontaneity with a smile. Bridget was born and raised in New Jersey and cannot imagine calling anywhere else “home.” She loves the entire NJ yoga community with lioness-like ferocity and cannot wait to show the world just what NJ yogis are up to – because it is crazy amazing stuff.
