We are IN IT.

The season of giving, thanks, gratitude, intention-setting, resolution-making – all of it.

So what’s your “plan”?

Big question.

Let’s work on answering it together.

The NJYC is planning incredible things for 2019 (and maybe one to close out 2018 too). Our mission is clear: to connect yoga students, teachers, and studios; to share incredible wellness events happening throughout NJ; to create a space for creative, intentional, and mindful expression; to produce yoga events that would highlight how amazing our NJ yoga community is; and to practice seva as a dedicated space supporting the local people and organizations working every day to change the world.

And we cannot do that with you.

So thanks for being here. Keep showing up, and we will keep shining the light on your awesomeness. You DESERVE it!

SOMETIMES DECISIONS ARE EASY – …like returning to Cuba for a fourth year! This place has become a yoga home for my groups. Not the rooms or buildings or even the yoga space. The people and the energy make each year incredibly special and unique. And the woman in the photo @coconutcuba has become a true source or love, inspiration and support for which I will be forever grateful. – Last year I was able to teach a class for the children in the community. We also took an unforgettable trip to Vinales. This year we added a trip to Trinidad, Cuba and we have some new accommodations – which includes our own pool! Swipe left to see some photos. – Of course we go to Havana and practice yoga. And we practice with Cuban yogis and Eduardo Pimentel who is responsible for bringing yoga to Cuba. Oh and the food! It’s all organic and delicious! – If you’ve been with me before, or Cuba is still on your bucket list, this is a great way to experience it. – There is more info in the link in my bio or you can dm for info. – I hope you can join us for this very special week! March 16 – 23, 2019. – – – – #yogaretreat2019 #cubayoga #yogateacher #justgo #actuallyiminhavana #travelcuba #girlslovetravel #huffpostwomen #travelingyogini #travelingyoginista #thetravelyogi #unboundpotential #njyogacollective /#dcyoga #womencrushwednesdays #yogateacherlife #beachyoga #yogalove #yogagirl /#yogaeverydamnday

Teaching yoga for so long, you tend get similar questions from students. A common question I get is: where should I feel this? I used to answer the student giving them a list of all the muscles I knew were being stretched and strengthened giving myself a silent pat on the back for knowing the anatomy 🙄 But over the years seeing so many different bodies-and hyper mobile bodies too who might not actually feel much of anything-my response has changed to: you’ll feel it wherever you’re tight and/or weak. This usually gets them to think about their own body and make a mind body connection and that, I’ve discovered is so much more powerful. Happy hump day, loves. Mornings used to be hell. Straight up garbage. Never enough rest, never enough time, always brutal and dreadful. Which makes sense, because waking up at the last minute into a morning where everything is urgent – unpleasant at best and not a good way to start the day. So I made friends with the early hours. I take time to start my day with breath, stillness, movement and resting awareness. I’m more crisp on less sleep and feel better than I ever have. SHOW UP FOR YOURSELF. Stop looking for external fixes and see what you’ve got inside. I’m telling you, anyone can do this. #meditation #yoga #morning #downwardfacingdog #adhomukhasvanasana #yogaeverydamnday #njyogacollective

We’ve all heard the cliche now..”you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you help others.” Self-care has been the buzzword of social media for years now. But do we know what it means to take care of ourselves? ❤️ Self-care started as a medical concept, helping patients learn proper diet and exercise to maintain good health. It was then adopted by mental health care professionals as a reminder to keep themselves physically and mentally strong to take on the issues of their clients. In the midst of the civil rights movement, self-care left the professional and became political as women and people of color recognized the need to take care of themselves when medical doctors or access to health care wasn’t available. Without doctors to rely on in times of need, it was necessary for these people to make sure they maintained their own wellness so that they could take care of their families. 🧡 We often confuse self-care with treating ourselves. Although treating yourself can sometimes be self-care, it’s not all abt lattes and bubble baths. Self-care is about feeding the body and feeding the soul so that you are able to participate in life. Self care is making sure you are not the last on the list. It is putting yourself above others (when appropriate) and not giving until you cannot stand anymore. It’s checking in with your mental state and doing the hard work necessary to keep yourself healthy. 💛 Yoga teaches us to pay attention to our own internal signals. It is training for us to move off the mat and hear when our body or mind says STOP! It helps us not just take care of our physical body so that we may participate more fully, it gives us tools for the mind to help make it through hard times. 💚 As we make clear at Amate Society, yoga is not the only tool in taking care of ourselves. Seek support in friends, family, community organizations, doctors, mental health professionals. You are not alone. And when in doubt, take a bubble bath, preferably with a latte on hand. 💙
