Open your Heart through Backbending with Madeline Plucinski

Sunday at Honor Yoga in Princeton

Contrary to popular belief, backbends are therapeutic for the body, mind and spirit. Not only do they restore balance in the spine by reversing the effects of all the sitting, standing and sleeping we do, but they also help to release stored emotions within the body. In this two-hour workshop, we will briefly discuss the anatomy of a healthy backbend and how it relates to our posture on and off the mat. We will also explore the energetics of backbends and how they help us nurture a more loving relationship with ourselves and others. We will then open our hearts by creating space in the front of the body through active stretching and conditioning exercises, specifically in the hips, shoulders, legs and lumbar spine. By simultaneously strengthening and stretching the spine and its surrounding muscle groups, we will relieve compression in the low spine and shift the “bend” into the upper and middle thoracic spine to open our hearts.

NJ YogaMay Louie first took yoga in college to fulfill a Phys-Ed requirement and immediately fell in love. She, unfortunately, did not continue with her practice but reconnected with it when she retired from her corporate job in 2002 and has since become a serious yoga enthusiast. After her second retirement in 2017, she completed her 200-hour RYT certification, studying with Dina Crosta, Ellen Mosko, and Jamie Segal Hanley, with a focus on alignment based flow.
