Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) are a wonderful way to warm up the body for yoga practice and begin to link the body with the breath. But like all yoga poses, the poses within a Sun Salutation are not one size fits all, and it’s hard to find your fit when you often only have one breath to find it. In this workshop, Christine and Karin will break down the poses practiced in Surya Namaskar A, offering each student individualized attention and recommendations. We’ll discuss alignment and repetitive stress, you’ll learn how props can help make you stronger, and you’ll find the pose variations that fit your unique body best. This workshop will give students a deeper understanding of what adjustments can be made in order to make Sun Salutations an effective and sustainable part of asana practice.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first time I experienced mindfulness after learning about the concept from a self help book, I remember intentionally closing my eyes, feeling the sun on my skin, taking a deep breath and just sobbing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As someone who suffers from anxiety, being stuck in constant thought was something I assumed was just part of life. The freedom I felt that day for the first time was completely life-changing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, I have spent countless hours learning and practicing this skill, and it has brought me a freedom that I never knew even existed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I still suffer. I still feel anxious and get stuck in thought loops or need help feeling grounded sometimes, but now I have this practice that roots me so deeply that I can rise up farther than I thought was possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am beyond excited to finally be in a place where I can share this life-changing tool with others. May Louie first took yoga in college to fulfill a Phys-Ed requirement and immediately fell in love. She, unfortunately, did not continue with her practice but reconnected with it when she retired from her corporate job in 2002 and has since become a serious yoga enthusiast. After her second retirement in 2017, she completed her 200-hour RYT certification, studying with Dina Crosta, Ellen Mosko, and Jamie Segal Hanley, with a focus on alignment based flow.
