Yoga for Scoliosis: An Introduction
Saturday at Honor Yoga in Pennington
Can Yoga help to re-map postural imbalances and alleviate the physical discomfort often experienced with abnormal curvature of the spine, commonly known as scoliosis? How does someone with scoliosis or spinal fusion practice yoga? This introductory workshop with Liz Alvarez, PT and Yoga Teacher, begins with an overview and discussion of how scoliosis is defined and classified. Then we will explore the role that yoga, modified for various types of curve patterns, can play as a complementary practice to traditional treatment methods. Students will then learn specific yoga poses, breathing techniques, modification recommendations, and basic sequencing guidelines ideally suited to address spinal asymmetry and encourage a deeper level of mind body awareness.
Saturday at Studio Yoga in Madison
The practice of backbend asana rejuvenates and strengthens the spine. As the chest expands the lungs become more elastic, breathing is enhanced, and posture is improved. Overall, one gains a sense of well-being and a positive outlook on life. This workshop will guide you through preliminary work to prepare the spine for moving through simple backbends to the more complex. Care will be given to those that need extra assistance. It is recommended that students have studied yoga for a minimum of one year and do not have significant back issues (such as rods in the back).

May Louie first took yoga in college to fulfill a Phys-Ed requirement and immediately fell in love. She, unfortunately, did not continue with her practice but reconnected with it when she retired from her corporate job in 2002 and has since become a serious yoga enthusiast. After her second retirement in 2017, she completed her 200-hour RYT certification, studying with Dina Crosta, Ellen Mosko, and Jamie Segal Hanley, with a focus on alignment based flow.
